It was a typical autumn morning when I got the call. My boyfriend, Jack, was on the other end of the line, and he sounded panicked. “Margot, I need your help,” he said urgently. “I’ve gotten myself into some trouble and I don’t know what to do.”
I could hear the fear in his voice, and my heart went out to him. “Anything, Jack,” I told him. “Just name it.”
“I’m in over my head with gambling debts,” he confessed. “If I don’t pay them back soon, they’re going to kill me.”
