3. Doreen Lioy’s Dark Past With Criminals

Lioy grew up in a middle-class neighborhood and attended Catholic schools. She was a good student and popular with her classmates. After high school, Lioy attended San Francisco State University, where she studied English and creative writing.

In 1976, Lioy met Richard Ramirez, a member of a satanic cult known as the “Night Stalkers.” Ramirez was in San Francisco on a killing spree, and Lioy became obsessed with him. She began attending his court hearings and sending him love letters. In 1985, Ramirez was sentenced to death, and Lioy began corresponding with him regularly. She visited him in prison and eventually married him in 1996.

Lioy’s obsession with Ramirez caused her to lose touch with reality. She quit her job, sold her possessions, and moved to Los Angeles to be closer to him. She changed her name to Doreen Ramirez and had his name tattooed on her arm. When Ramirez was finally executed in 2006, Lioy was devastated. She attempted suicide several times and was committed to a mental institution.

Today, Lioy is living in a group home and is receiving treatment for her mental illness. She still writes to Ramirez’s family and talks about him often. She says she misses him every day and that she will never love anyone else.

4. The Tragic End Of Doreen Lioy’s Obsession

On December 8, 1981, Doreen Lioy and Richard Ramirez were married in a small civil ceremony in California. The two had met just a few months earlier, when Ramirez was already on death row for his crimes as the “Night Stalker” killer. For Lioy, it was love at first sight.

For the next 14 years, Lioy remained devoted to Ramirez, even after he was sentenced to death. She visited him regularly, and even though he was in prison, she considered herself married to him.

In the early hours of September 14, 1996, Richard Ramirez died of natural causes in San Quentin Prison. He was 53 years old.

Doreen Lioy’s obsession with Ramirez ended with his death. She never married again and died in 2017 at the age of 63.
